Naturally, your wedding photographs - taken by a professional – steal the show when it comes to beautiful memories of you and your partner’s union in marriage, and rightly so. You want those memories to last forever and have a wedding album that is the envy of all your friends. With all the fuss over wedding photographs, however, couples often don’t give a thought to honeymoon photographs until they are packing their cameras into their onboard luggage the night before they set off on the trip. Too often the all-important honeymoon pictures are relegated to the after-thought pile, and not given the time and consideration that they deserve.
If you have decided to buy a new camera to capture your honeymoon memories, it would be a very good idea to spend time getting to know the new piece of equipment prior to your trip. Explore the various light settings that your camera has as well as the different colour modes if you have a digital camera. If you have a film camera rather than the more commonly used digital camera, practice loading film into your camera, as well as what to do when your roll of film is finished – you don’t want to run the risk of over-exposing all your photographs because you didn’t wind the spool on correctly. If you have chosen a digital camera, don’t be afraid to play with the zoom and crop features after taking your photograph – you may just find that the most interesting part of your picture was captured in the top right hand corner.
Having made sure you know how to handle your camera, what can be done to ensure beautiful and interesting pictures? It’s very easy to fall into the trap of taking endless pictures of “the happy couple standing in front of a landmark mile-marker” and losing the actual emotions of your honeymoon experience. Keep in mind that candid shots are often the most memorable photographs, as not all your pictures need to be posed. It is also perfectly acceptable not to face the camera when the photograph is taken. Imagine stumbling upon a hillside covered with flowers – take a photograph of your new bride in the foreground facing away from you looking at the blossoms. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to take a picture of the two of you walking away down a beach. That having been said, make sure that the person you entrust to take this photograph isn’t going to hightail it down the beach with your camera while your back is turned!
Always be on the lookout for natural scenery – whether it be a rainbow, a beautiful sunset or a dilapidated old building, all these could make for stunning and memorable honeymoon photographs. Light can also have an awesome effect on your photos with candlelight and the sun’s rays both contributing to amazing backdrops. You don’t even need to be in the photograph to make it memorable. Write your names in the sand surrounded by a heart as a novel way of capturing the beach that you were exploring at the time.
Considering an underwater disposable camera may be an option worth exploring if you are honeymooning at the seaside. In this way you would be able to capture underwater kisses, snorkelling memories and artistic shots of your partner’s silhouette all while in an aquatic environment.
By adding just a few artistic touches to your honeymoon photography, you’ll ensure an album worthy of showing your family and friends with pride. Never be afraid to try something new or take a spontaneous shot. These photographs will be with you for a lifetime. You should be proud to have them take their rightful place right next to your professionally photographed wedding album.
